By Lee SutherlinAt Lutheran High School on Friday, July 15th and 16th, Team Terminator – young women from Villa Duchesne High School Class of 2013 lead by local Lake Saint Louis resident Sarah Sutherlin – participated in the 2011 Relay for Life of Central Saint Charles County. This is the 2nd year in a row that Team Terminator from Villa has participated in this terrific event. This group banned together for the purpose of finding a cure for cancer and raising funds in support of cancer research.
They walked in honor of Mr. Bobby Tutor, a 38 year old father and husband. Bobby was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2010. Major surgery was followed by weeks of chemotherapy. It was unbelievably inspiring to see Bobby walk hand in hand with his son on his first survivors lap around the track. Bobby is a fighter! Less than one month ago, the doctors declared Bobby cancer free!
The Relay was a huge success raising over $53,000. 41 teams and over 450 participated in the 12 hour event. From Christmas Caroling in December to Bake Sales in July, impressive funds were raised by Team Terminator - $5,823 in total! Over $3,400 raised by Sarah alone! The team was awarded the Top Fundraising Team for the event with Sarah being named the Top Individual Contributor.
Spirit bucks were awarded to teams throughout the night for their active participation in various events. Team Terminator collected the most bucks resulting in winning the RELAY SPIRIT stick award! Tired, yet invigorated after 12 hours of walking and no sleep, the girls concluded the event walking arm and arm for their final lap declaring victory over cancer.
The American Cancer Society, a nationwide, community-based, voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives, and diminishing suffering from cancer through research, education, advocacy, and service, sanctioned the event.
